Many car drivers don’t understand the sense of freedom you get on a motorcycle. There are certainly risks – there isn’t a protective metal shell around you – but experienced riders have learned to balance the validity of safety with the full and free life of riding. Those who are willing to uphold this responsible balance with every journey deserve respect, not disdain.
Unfortunately, people who know no better often blame motorcyclists instinctively for a crash. Riders are sometimes falsely accused of recklessness by car drivers who should have been more aware themselves. They are even looked upon as totally responsible for their own injuries, which are almost always much more serious than those, if any, sustained by the car driver. The fact is that motorcyclists are about thirty times more likely to die in a crash.
Other motorcycle injuries can include:
- Neck / Chest / Spinal Cord Damage
- Head and Brain Injury
- Partial or Full Paralysis
- Burns and Road Rash
- Internal Injuries
- Orthopodeic Problems
- Cuts and Scrapes
- Broken and Fractured Ribs

Delaware County Motorcycle Law
The Pennsylvania law requires helmets and eye protection to be worn by motorcyclists under the age of 21, by those who have had licenses for less than two full years, and by those who have not taken approved rider safety courses. Some types of helmet are not permissible. Consult the Department of Transportation and use your best judgment. A 2009 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated “motorcycle helmets to be 48 percent effective at preventing facial injuries in single-vehicle crashes and 34 percent effective at preventing facial injuries in multiple-vehicle crashes.”
